As a result of the pandemic the normal process of renewing identity cards was seriously affected to the point that to date there are more than 2 million five hundred thousand expired cards and pending expiration throughout the country.Currently the regions with the highest concentration of expired and pending documents are the Metropolitan with more than one million Valparaso with around 270000 and Biobo with approximately 226000.Thinking about this situation and to facilitate the renewal of this important document the Minister of Justice and Human Rights Marcela Ros together with the Undersecretary of Justice Jaime Gajardo and the National Directors of the Civil Registry and Identification Service Jorge Nez announced a series of measures aimed at speeding up this process.One of the most important was announcing the new document extension decree which extends the validity for one year of the Chilean and Chilean IDs that expire between March and July 2022 until the same date in 2023.The foregoing means that if the identity card expires on July 25 2022 its validity is postponed until July 25 2023.
