Allowing permanent control of those who circulate through the airports of our country and thus prevent the occurrence of crimes is the central objective of the project that modifies the Organic Law of the PDI to authorize the use of authentication technologies for the correct identification of air transport passengers. The initiative is in its second stage, is part of the priority security agenda and was approved in general by the Senate, setting Thursday, January 9 as the final deadline to submit indications.

According to the president of the , Senator , the initiative seeks to improve security at airports by providing better tools to the institutions in charge of carrying out controls aimed at safeguarding the safety of passengers, crew, airport officials and society in general. To this end, the project establishes that it is the responsibility of the PDI to control the entry and exit of people from the national territory, to adopt, with the personnel provided by the respective headquarters and, by means of any device or technological means suitable for this purpose, all measures conducive to ensuring the correct identification of people leaving and traveling within the national territory, as well as to verify the validity and authenticity of their travel documents. During the analysis of the project, Senators and , intervened, who agreed on the importance of advancing measures such as those proposed by the project to provide greater security and increase efficiency.

They also noted that new technologies allow for identification not only by fingerprints but also by facial features and even voice, such as the Automated Biometric Identification System, ABIS, which the PDI is testing in the country. However, they raised the need to provide the necessary resources at a central level to ensure that there is an adequate number of PDI personnel at national airports, in order to move towards a substantial improvement in the control of people traveling by air in the country. Along the same lines, it was proposed to comply with the commitment of the law on governance and interoperability.
