π Tender Overview
Within the framework of World Internet Day, the National Center for Strategic Planning (Ceplan) highlights that the expansion of digital connectivity and the accelerated growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) will continue to transform the global economy over the coming years, generating opportunities to improve productivity, modernize services and strengthen digital inclusion in Peru.
The IoT allows the intelligent interconnection of devices, systems and platforms that collect and process information in real time. Its application extends to sectors such as health, transportation, energy, agriculture and public services, where it contributes to optimizing resources, improving processes and expanding productive capacities.
According to the information available in the Ceplan National Foresight Observatory, by 2030 it is projected that there will be more than 41.1 billion connected IoT devices in the world.
In the Americas region, connectivity indicators show sustained expansion. During 2024, 87% of the population accessed the Internet, while 5G network coverage reached 63% of the inhabitants. Likewise, mobile broadband registered a density of 125 subscriptions per 100 people and access in rural areas reached 74%, exceeding the world average.
The country presents favorable conditions to incorporate the IoT as a strategic tool for competitiveness and innovation, driven by the advancement of digital connectivity and technological promotion policies. However, it is noted that challenges related to infrastructure, coverage and adoption of advanced technologies still persist, especially in areas with greater connectivity gaps.
In this way, Ceplan warns that Peru still maintains important gaps compared to other Latin American countries. According to World Bank data corresponding to 2023, Chile registered internet access coverage of 94.5% of its population, followed by Argentina with 89.2%, Brazil with 84.2%, Mexico with 81.2% and Peru with 79.5%.
Given this context, the agency recommends strengthening investments in broadband infrastructure and mobile networks, especially in areas with less coverage, as well as promoting regulatory frameworks that promote competition, interoperability and data protection.
Likewise, it highlights the importance of developing digital skills and promoting the adoption of technological solutions in strategic sectors to ensure that digital transformation contributes to economic growth, the modernization of public services and the reduction of social and territorial gaps in the country.
