π Tender Overview
As part of the Cooperation between Germany and Cape Verde, the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), in Germany, will build, in partnership with national institutions, a new Aerosol Particle Analysis laboratory in Cape Verde (SΓ£o Vicente).
The idea of the Cape Verde Observatory arose from the need to establish monitoring centers in the West African coast region, both of the ocean and of the atmosphere, as the phenomena and compositions of the region are peculiar and important for the understanding of the interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean.
This observatory includes several laboratories and will provide for the first time, in this region, unique opportunities to monitor extreme weather conditions on the ground and at high altitude, pollution episodes or mineral dust and biomass burning events, and ocean-atmosphere interaction processes relevant to understanding climate change and associated health effects.
The data generated (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace gases Research Infrastructure) will be made available to local, regional and international stakeholders through open access data platforms to assist in policy-making and monitoring the effectiveness of air quality regulations, optimising regional weather forecasts and understanding the evolution of short-lived atmospheric constituents of particular importance.
The Government is aware of the state of climate emergency in which the world finds itself, negatively impacting livelihoods, economies, ecosystems and people's well-being. As such, the Government advocates for a responsible attitude by all and science-based policy design and decision-making in the best available science, wherever possible. It is with this vision that Cape Verde welcomes this Observatory, thus contributing to the global goal of combating climate change.
The laying of the first stone of the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory will take place tomorrow, October 5 in SΓ£o Vicente, as part of the visit of the President of Germany, Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to Cape Verde.
