ORANJESTAD -- On November 2 14 candidates officially began the Basic Training Program for Correctional Officers after successfully completing the selection process that began in April of this year.Out of nearly 50 applicants 14 candidates ultimately met all admission requirements. This training program represents a key step in the governments ongoing efforts to strengthen staffing capacity at the Aruba Correctional Institute (KIA) and foster a safer more professional correctional system.According to Minister of Justice Integration Public Transportation and Energy Dr. Arthur Dowers this intake reflects strong interest among young adults to contribute to safety and justice in Aruba.Discipline Integrity and Mental StrengthMinister Dowers emphasized that serving as a correctional officer requires discipline integrity responsibility and thorough professional preparation. Working in a correctional facility is demanding and requires not only maintaining order and security but also treating inmates humanely.It demands mental strength discipline and the ability to act professionally even in challenging situations the minister stated. He placed special emphasis on the importance of integrity: Temptations can be significant and many of you are still young. You will be interacting with individuals who are highly experienced and adept at manipulation. Without realizing it you could fall into their trap.Investing in New PersonnelThe Aruba Correctional Institute currently faces substantial challenges regarding both infrastructure and staffing capacity. The limited number of personnel puts additional pressure on daily operations.
