📋 Tender Overview
Between February and March 2025, the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) rescued a 57 -year -old worker, born in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, who was in conditions analogous to those of slave in an unfinished and paralyzed construction work in Porto Alegre/RS. The action was carried out with the support of the Labor Public Prosecution Service (MPT), the Federal Police (PF) and the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance.
The worker, initially hired as a carpenter for the construction of 20 semi -house houses, continued to work until 2015, when the construction was interrupted. From that moment on, he assumed maintenance and surveillance functions of the place. With the abandonment of the work, the conditions of the environment deteriorated significantly, and he remained in place, without alternatives.
The inspection team found that the worker lived in precarious conditions, without access to running water, electricity or sanitary facilities. There was no proper accommodation, and he was forced to sleep on a foam on the floor of one of the unfinished houses, accessible only by a wooden ladder. This was the only place where he was sheltered during the rains. For their consumer needs and personal hygiene, the worker used rainwater.
In addition, the inspection found that the worker did not have a work card record and did not receive salaries, surviving from social benefits, donations and eventual amounts provided by the employer. Given this alarming situation, the labor auditors of the labor removed the worker from the site and referred him to welcome the social assistance of the municipality.
The employer was notified to pay all salary and severance pay due for the period worked. The unemployment insurance was also issued for the rescued worker, who will ensure the receipt of three installments of a minimum wage. The employer will be assessed and may be named in the so -called dirty list, the registration of employers who have submitted workers to conditions analogous to slavery. By 2025, the Ministry of Labor and Employment, through Labor Inspection, has already rescued 45 workers in similar conditions in Rio Grande do Sul.
