Work begins to improve the Eastern Access to Montevideo

The works plan seeks to solve the problems of vehicle congestion, connectivity and road safety at four critical points of the road network in the Eastern Access to Montevideo. It will be developed in different stages and includes: Intersection of Route 101 and Route 102; intersection Av. de las Américas - Route 101; roundabout at Calcagno and Av. de las Américas - Av. Racine.
Through these interventions, the aim is to generate a qualitative change in the road infrastructure of the metropolitan area. The main objectives of the project lie in the significant reduction of travel times, the reorganization of traffic through auxiliary roads and flow separation, and an increase in road safety, with special attention to vulnerable users.
To affect circulation through the work area as little as possible, alternative lanes will be built to always maintain two lanes in both directions. In any case, as this is an area under construction, the alternatives will be informed in a timely manner with greater fluidity through communications, the social media accounts of the Highway Police, the Municipality of Canelones and the MTOP, as well as through variable messaging panels arranged before the work area.
The total works will be carried out in a period of approximately 26 months and are in charge of the Perimetral Este Group, made up of the companies Grinor, Molinsur and Serviam. The estimated investment for the first stage of work amounts to USD 74 million, including maintenance. Work has already begun at the intersection of Routes 101 and 102 and on Calcagno Avenue, which will last four and eight months respectively.
Detail of the works
Route 101 - Route 102 intersection: A widening of the road will be carried out to optimize flow capacity. New approach lanes will be provided on both routes. The construction of pedestrian paths and the readjustment of traffic lights will be carried out, which will be monitored by the Center for Intelligent Transit Systems (CSIT) of the Ministry of Transportation.
New Roundabout in Calcagno: it will connect Calcagno Avenue and the service roads of Route 101 with the current airport roundabout. This work will reorganize traffic and promote more fluid circulation.
Intersection Av. de las Américas - Ruta 101: A viaduct will be built that will connect the Avenida de las Américas with Route 101 in an elevated manner. This solution will keep the current roundabout operational in the lower area, which will guarantee a reduction in travel times.
Av. de las Américas - Av. Racine: a viaduct will be built over Av. Racine. At the bottom, a roundabout and side service roads will be created to organize local circulation. Additionally, it will include a pedestrian walkway to connect both sides of Roosevelt Park.
