Austria Obb Start Tender

📄 Tender ID: 500589844 📅 Published: 15 Feb 2024

📋 Tender Overview

The heavily frequented railway crossing in Waidmannsdorf will be replaced by a modern road underpass with a pedestrian and cycle path underpass. The extensive construction project aims to increase safety for all road users and improve traffic flow. Construction work will start in February 2024 and last until the end of October 2025.

As part of an information evening at the Waidmannsdorf community centre, ÖBB, together with the city of Klagenfurt and Klagenfurt Mobil, informed the citizens in the project environment about the construction work that will start shortly and its effects. As part of the project, Waidmannsdorfer Straße will be lowered from the Ankershofenstraße intersection and run under the ÖBB railway line. Upon completion, Dietrichstraße will no longer be connected to Waidmannsdorfer Straße. Bahnstraße will be connected to Humboldstraße by means of a bridging. The work will take place while the important rail connection between Klagenfurt and Villach is still in operation.

Statements of the project partners
Christiane Schiavinato, Project Manager ÖBB Infrastruktur AG: "We are pleased to be able to close another railway crossing in Carinthia by the end of 2025. Every abandoned railway crossing is a sustainable investment in safety and means permanent relief for road users and residents. Our important appeal in terms of safety at the beginning of the construction work: The construction work will take place while the railway is running, so please take special care! The barriers of the construction site serve to protect everyone involved."

Christian Scheider, Mayor of Klagenfurt: "Finally, the long-awaited and urgently needed construction of the railway underpass in Waidmannsdorf has begun. This was preceded by a lot of planning and preparations. A very important project for the state capital of Klagenfurt is now being realised and implemented. From autumn 2025, there will be no more waiting times for motorists in the area. In addition, with the removal of the railway crossing, safety for pedestrians and cyclists will also increase considerably."

City Councillor Sandra Wassermann, BA, Consultant for Road Construction and Traffic: "Up to eight hours of daily waiting time in front of the barrier will soon be a thing of the past. For more than 20 years, only this has been discussed. Now, in my responsibility as road construction and traffic officer, we can finally implement a modern railway underpass together with our partners, which will improve safety and quality of life."

Closure and diversions from Saturday, 3 February 2024
Course: To ensure that journeys on the Klagenfurt – Villach railway line are possible without restrictions, work will be carried out during ongoing operations. With the exception of individual track closures, rail operations will remain unrestricted.

By bike and on foot: The first four months require complex construction, which is why the railway crossing has to be completely closed during this time. From 3 June 2024, a temporary passage will make it possible to cross the construction site on foot. For cyclists, it is then a matter of getting off and pushing the bike through the passage.

CAR: During the entire construction period, motorists will be diverted via Ankershofenstraße – Rosentaler Straße – Maximilianstraße

Bus: From 3 February 2024, the following changes will be made to the KMG bus route network:Line B will no longer be routed in the Waidmannsdorf area, both in and out of the city, via Ankershofenstraße, but exclusively via Maximilianstraße (Goethestraße,
Waidmannsdorfer Straße stops). As a result, the stops Schaumgasse, Unfallkrankenhaus and Lorenz-Kheppiz-Gasse will no longer be served.

Line 5 will be routed in the Heiligengeistplatz/Rizzibrücke section via August-Jaksch-Straße instead of Villacher Straße. As a result, an alternative connection to the UKH will be secured - due to the elimination of the previously served section of Ankershofenstraße of line B. In the area of August-Jaksch-Straße at Waidmannsdorfer Straße, a temporary stop in and out of town will be set up in each direction. At the level of Sponheimer Straße, another stop is being built.

Will there be weekend and night work?
In some cases, construction work during track closures also has to be carried out at night and on weekends. The residents directly affected will be informed in advance by direct mail.
