📋 Tender Overview
OBB has ordered the first 70 multiple units from a framework agreement for up to 540 electric multiple units for local and long-distance transport with Siemens Mobility. Of these, eleven local trains are in the 73-metre variant and 28 are 106-metre trains for use in various federal states. 31 sets for long-distance intra-Alpine transport complete the first call-off. The current order is worth over 800 million euros, and the first sets will be in service from the end of 2027.
"With the 70 additional multiple units, we are consistently continuing our investment program in a modern fleet. The new trains have a top speed of 160 km/h and offer increased passenger comfort, barrier-free entrances, the possibility of taking bicycles with them and Wi-Fi. In addition, a special focus was placed on efficient energy consumption," emphasizes ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.
"We are increasing the high level of passenger comfort of the internationally established trains by designing the carriages even wider and equipping the train with additional chassis. With our technologies, we combine cost-effectiveness for ÖBB, sustainability for the environment and a particularly high level of ride comfort for passengers," says Tanja Kienegger, CEO Siemens Mobility Austria.
Sustainable and modern
One of the ways in which the new trains achieve greater sustainability is through the use of a natural refrigerant for air conditioning. In addition, the use of heat pump technology and lightweight construction reduces energy consumption to a minimum.
Of course, the new trains also score points in terms of performance and equipment. This allows them to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. Barrier-free access is provided by entrances at the same level. Space for wheelchairs and strollers is generously planned. Passengers can also look forward to numerous features such as information monitors with a modern passenger information system, Wi-Fi and holders for tablets and smartphones.
