The NEOS call for a national ban on the use of software for automated and mass facial recognition in a motion for a resolution introduced by Nikolaus Scherak.Such software is increasingly used worldwide but it is extremely problematic according to NEOS. Many who are concerned with it such as Amnesty International the European Data Protection Board or the EU Data Protection Supervisor would strongly warn against its application. The European Commission is already planning a regulation to regulate such use.The main problem raised in the application is that the use of facial recognition software in public spaces massively interferes with fundamental rights in particular the right to privacy. According to NEOS however it is central for democracies that citizens can move freely anonymously and without state surveillance.
