On the sidelines of the 18th Session of its General Conference the United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO organized an event on Fostering Innovation and Connectivity for a Smooth Transformation to Industry 4.0.The event offered a platform for experts to explore new options to mobilize collective actions to foster collaboration innovation and connectivity in order to ensure a smooth transformation to Industry 4.0 as the challenges incurred by the fourth industrial revolution 4IR require new thinking and new approaches.The event also sought to increase awareness on industry standards and regulations for Industry 4.0 and highlighted the role of multi-stakeholder platforms that promote the development of innovation ecosystems.UNIDO will work with its Member States to build competencies and absorptive capacities in least developed and developing countries to prepare them for a smooth transformation to Industry 4.0 said UNIDO Director General LI Yong. UNIDO will foster partnerships with other international organizations development finance institutions and private sector entities to mobilize resources for large-scale Industry 4.0 infrastructure projects.During the event several new UNIDO publications including on Nature-like and Convergent Technologies Driving the 4IR Ensuring Industrial Safety - The Role of Government Regulations Standards and New Technologies the UNIDO Strategic Response for Ensuring a Smooth Transformation to the 4IR and Unlocking the potential of Industry 4.0 for developing countries Asia and Pacific.A few years ago an idea of implementing new information technologies and smart inventions in industries was perceived with skepticism but today we see that digital technologies are increasingly used for the sake of industrial safety noted Alexander Rybas State Secretary Deputy Head of Federal Environmental Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service Rostechnadzor.The event concluded that in order to embrace the opportunities from the development of Industry 4.0 technologies collective actions are needed a smooth transformation to Industry 4.0 can only be safeguarded by fostering innovation and connectivity. UNIDO will therefore continue to exercise its role on advancing frontier technologies to achieve inclusive and sustainable industrial development.The side event brought together government officials and policy makers the international community representatives of the private sector academia and the civil society.
