📋 Tender Overview

Dorner: “Safe, high-quality, and direct cycling connections should make cycling significantly more attractive.” The expansion of cycling infrastructure and the implementation of basic cycling networks in all districts is one of the key projects of Burgenland's overall transport strategy. Since 2022, the state has been pushing ahead with its cycling attractiveness program at full speed – "and very successfully," as State Minister for Transport Heinrich Dorner noted at a press conference together with Christine Zopf-Renner, Head of the Burgenland Mobility Center. Dorner: "In 2024 alone, 16 infrastructure projects with a total length of more than 25 kilometers and construction costs of approximately five million euros – including municipal projects – were implemented. Safe, high-quality, and direct cycling connections between villages and town centers are a prerequisite for increasing the number of cyclists and gradually making Burgenland the number one cycling state in the coming years."

In total, around 25 million euros will be invested in Burgenland over five years for the renovation and expansion of cycle path projects in order to bring the cycling infrastructure up to date across the state.

Implementation of the 2025 bicycle construction program has already begun. Projects that will be tackled this year include the everyday bicycle connection between Lockenhaus and the new Park & ??Ride facility, a safe cycling infrastructure from Marz towards Sieggraben with an initial section, and the closure of the gap between Trausdorf and Eisenstadt to ensure safe access to the city center. Further projects such as the connection from Wiesen to the train station, new bicycle streets in Oberschützen, Großpetersdorf, and Rechnitz, and pavement rehabilitation throughout Burgenland will be implemented in 2025.

Important projects in 2024 included the construction of the roadway from the Pöttelsdorf industrial estate to Mattersburg, the new cycle bridge in Rudersdorf, and the connection from Trausdorf to Eisenstadt. In Mörbisch, the cycle path to the lakeside resort was renovated. A new cycle connection was built from Kobersdorf to Weppersdorf, and in Steinberg/Dörfl, the Park & ??Ride facility was connected with new cycle paths.

What does a bicycle street mean for road users?
Entry and exit for vehicles is permitted, but no through traffic.
Cyclists are allowed to ride next to each other and
The speed limit is automatically 30 km/h!
In road traffic, it's generally important to be considerate of one another. This also applies to cycling. Cycle routes are often located on mixed-use roads. This means that the road is shared by cyclists and other interested groups—such as farmers or residents. The state of Burgenland is placing increasing emphasis on awareness-raising.

With flagship projects like the new cycle paths and cycle streets, important milestones are being set, and the bicycle boom is receiving a further boost. "With this expansion program, Burgenland is a pioneer in Austria," emphasized Dorner.

Good cooperation with municipalities and landowners is crucial for the realization of construction projects. "Improving the state's cycle network can only be achieved if we all pull together. My thanks go to all landowners who are open to land redemption, as well as to the municipalities that support the expansion program," said the State Councilor.

“Burgenland Cycles” from 20 March 2025 – Every bike ride counts
In addition to improving cycling infrastructure, it is also important to encourage Burgenland residents to cycle. One contribution to this is the well-known and popular "Burgenland Cycles" participation campaign, which will start again on March 20, 2025. "Anyone who registers at burgenland.radelt.at and cycles diligently by September 30, 2025, can win great prizes. No athletic achievement is required. Every bike ride counts! Municipalities, businesses, or clubs can also participate again. Registered participants can then cycle for their municipality, business, or club," explains Zopf-Renner.

Across Austria, the best municipalities will receive €500 vouchers for a half-day bike service, and the best businesses and clubs will receive €500 Pluxxee vouchers. Around 70 prizes will be raffled off among all Burgenland participants who cycle and register at least 100 kilometers between March 20 and September 30, 2025. The main prizes are a two-day wellness vacation for two people including half-board plus at the Reduce Hotel Vital in Bad Tatzmannsdorf and an ÖBB travel voucher worth €300. Five e-bikes can be won across Austria.

In addition, there are vouchers from sporting goods retailers, vouchers for spas, vouchers for e-bike weekends, vouchers for the Family Park, and numerous non-cash prizes to be won. "Many thanks to our fantastic sponsors, who are once again generously supporting us this year so that we can boost motivation for cycling across the country," emphasizes Zopf-Renner.

For schools, there's the "Burgenland Cycles to School" campaign under the motto "woom2school." The school campaign runs until June 6, 2025. Schools can participate by class. A prize of €500 for the class fund will be raffled off among all classes that cycle at least 500 kilometers together (for elementary schools, it's "only" 300 kilometers this year). In addition, all school cyclists have the opportunity to win great individual prizes if they cycle at least 50 kilometers.

The main prizes are a Woom NOW bike and an ÖBB travel voucher worth €200. In 2025, Burgenland will be offering a cool class prize for the first time: All classes that achieve at least 50 percent participation (active students in relation to the total class size) by April 30, 2025, can win the ÖBB Lake's Escape detective game on the train.
