The school year has started the buses trains and HEVs are full again with students trying to go to school.This year the MAV group draws attention to the most important rules for using travel discounts and passes.What discounts are pupils and students entitled to?How can eligibility be proven?What information can be included on the pass and what should be taken care of when using paper-based passes?We have collected the most important information so that the journey to and from school is smooth on public transport.
Discounted county or country pass: what do you need to know?
Pupils and students in day and evening education as well as those with a student or adult education legal relationship in vocational education can exchange for a discounted county or national pass.
When purchasing a paper-based pass the card number of the permanent student ID (the 10-digit number on the front of the plastic card in the upper right corner) or failing this the number of the identification card must be entered or written on the pass.The number of the temporary student ID card cannot be written on the pass but it is required to prove entitlement to the discount.In addition to their student ID pupils or students who participate in professional education and have a correspondence student ID card also need a KRETA certificate.
One important rule is definitely worth remembering.The education ID must not be written on the pass the grace period for the use and acceptance of the ID for this purpose expired at the end of the 2025/26 academic year on June 19This data can therefore no longer be used to personalize the pass (transport companies cannot handle this data) so the pass completed in this way will not be accepted during inspection.
Tickets and passes purchased online - in the MAVPlusz application the MAV app and the jegy.mav.hu site - are assigned to a person by entering their name and date of birth.The personalization data must be verified with a personal identification card and the entitlement to the discount must be verified in the manner prescribed for the given discount.
If the pass was assigned to a person only by entering the pass number (paper-based pass) the pass whose number appears on the pass must always be presented during the inspection.Be sure to have an identity card with us as during the trip in addition to being entitled to a discount your identity will also be checked.(It cannot be verified with a Digital Citizen - DAP - application.)

In intercity transport there are also discounts based on age:
Up to 6 years old accompanied by an adult travel free of charge;
Between the ages of 6 and 14 you can also travel free of charge;
Between the ages of 14 and 25 a 50 percent ticket can be exchanged.
Proof of age basically requires a document suitable for personal identification.The student card alone is not acceptable as proof of age except for those under the age of 14 who can prove their age in intercity transport with a permanent student card or with a photocopy or photo of their identity card or identity card.
There may be other rules in local traffic
In local transport the discounts and eligibility conditions may differ from town to town so it is always worth checking the local tariff of the transport company or the local tariff of the given town.
Children may generally be entitled to a discounted pass based on their age (from 6 to 14 years old) and their student status.
In the case of a paper-based pass it is also important here that the education ID cannot be placed on it.The card number of the permanent student card or the number of the personal identification document may appear on the pass.
Pay close attention to the storage of the paper pass
The pass printed on thermal paper does not like heat water rubbing and folding.If you want it to remain legible throughout the month you should avoid them.However you must not laminate itThe heat generated during lamination can destroy the thermal paper so the inscriptions on the pass can even become completely illegible.
When using a plastic case it doesnt matter what we choose.Plasticizers in PVC cases can damage the thermal paper in the long term so it is recommended to use a polyester polypropylene or polyethylene-based case.
If the inscription on the pass starts to fade or the bar code becomes more difficult to read it is not worth waiting until it becomes completely unreadable.MAV Personal Transport Zrt. replaces the pass with missing data free of charge if the bar code can still be scanned or the serial number can be read in its entirety.The exchange can be made at MAV ticket offices and customer services.
The digital pass can come
The inconvenience associated with storing and damaging the paper pass can be avoided with the online pass.The pass purchased in the MAVPlusz application is therefore not only more convenient but also practical in that you do not have to worry that the pass will wear out prematurely in your pocket wallet or bag.
Before traveling it is therefore worth checking whether you have the correct ID whether the correct information is on the pass and - if you use a paper pass - whether it is legible.That way you definitely dont have to worry about the trip before and after classes.Make sure that the phone is properly charged and lasts until the end of the trip.
