Angosat-2 was presented as a solution to provide communication services in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in the event of natural disasters.
This measure was presented by the specialist from the National Space Programme Management Office (GGPEN), Silva Malaca, during the workshop organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in partnership with the SADC Secretariat, which takes place from 9 to 11 October this year, Lilongwe.
According to information published on the GGPEN website and consulted by JA Online, the conference sought to implement the SADC NETP Model, strengthening the capacity of Member States in emergency telecommunications and promoting the exchange of practices and experiences with organizations such as GSMA, WMO and ITU.
According to the same source, satellites such as Angosat-2 are essential in case of emergencies, as they provide rapid communication in areas where telecommunications infrastructure is destroyed.
In recent years, GGPEN says, SADC has been "severely" affected by disasters such as Cyclones Idai, Kenneth and Freddy, which disrupted telecommunications networks, highlighting the need for efficient communication links to coordinate public security responses.
